Any "best of" list is perhaps going to be contentious. Look at the outcry over the Times' best places to live in the UK - and its internet opposite, the worst. Three places near our base in Urmston were praised - Ancoats, Sale and Manchester city centre. Residents of East and West Didsbury were not lauded, neither was Altrincham, often regarded as one of the best places in Cheshire.

Liverpool, to Mancunian surprise perhaps, was named the best place to live in the UK.
